KNUT ERIK JENSEN, NORWEGIAN CONCERT PIANIST & TENOR

See that Nordic figure breaching the crest of that dune over there? No it it not a mirage. Mr. Knut Erik Jensen will be arriving in our beautiful desert on March 27. Mr. Jensen has volunteered to help the Guild team at the Palm Springs Opera Guild Member Information area for Opera In The Park on Sunday, March 28. Stop by and say hello and wish a welcome to this Norwegian concert pianist and accomplished tenor who will be calling the desert his home. We will soon be seeing and hearing Mr. Jensen on many of the noted stages and venues of our valley.

The Norwegian pianist was born in the small town of Hell, Norway on the 6th of March 1981, and was raised in Selbu.

Here in the US he has performed the Grieg A-minor Concerto with the Minot Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dennis Simons. He also cooperated with the Norwegian Embassy and the Norwegian General Consulates in the USA performing cultural outreach and performed at the Rice University in Houston, Texas.

In 2009, Knut Erik played his "Nordic Elegance" program about 35 times in the USA. He was also invited to the Republic of Moldova to perform the Grieg concerto with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Moldova.

In 2006, Knut Erik was aaccepted as a master student of performing piano at the Music Institute in Trondheim. The musical emphasis has been Russian music centered around the composer Alexander Scriabin.

He has done Russian recitals in the Trondheim area and did his masters exam in May 2009 performing the Scriabin piano concerto with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.

In 2007, accompanied the Norwegian soprano star Janne Berglund.

Knut Erik has just finished a long-term artist residency at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada to improve his skills further and to prepare his new program "From Grieg to Gershwin."

His latest program, a tribute to Emmy Award winning pianist and Palm Springs resident Earl Wild who died in January of this year.

THE CELEBRATON OF A VERY SUCCESSFUL SEASON AND THE OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION OF OFFICERS

Stephen Lind graciously hosted the Palm Springs Opera Guild as
they celebrated the winding down of a very successful season
in his beautiful and spacious home in Palm Springs. The slate of
officers was also officially confirmed at this occasion and with that official business completed many potential new members had the opportunity to mingle, socialize and experience a late afternoon of
Guild fun, music and camaraderie. Wine, cheese, coffee and sweets
galore were savored while one of our favorite tenors Joshua
Guerrero performed accompanied by Bruce Mangum at the
piano. It was a lovely way to combine the Guilds business of Election of Officers with a festive celebration of the weeks end and the seasons winding down while simultaneously feeling the buzz and excitement building in the air over the Guilds upcoming Annual Opera In The Park Festival and Concert on Sunday, March 28, in Sunrise Park in Palm Springs.

FREE CONCERT & FESTIVAL
Sunday, March 28
Festival Grounds Open at 10 am
Concert is from Noon-5:00pm

Sunrise Park in Palm Springs, California
(Click for Directions)

Building on an eleven year tradition of presenting
the most talented young opera singers this year's
Palm Springs Opera Guild's production of Opera in
the Park, will be another crowd pleaser. The 12th
annual Opera in the Park will spotlight the
Southwest's brightest up and coming opera star
in what is sure to be one of the top collections
of performers to ever grace the stage of this
FREE public event.

Opera in the Park, Sunday, March 28 from noon
to 5:00pm will be a day-long concert of arias
which will be held at Sunrise Park in the City
of Palm Springs located on Sunrise Way
between Ramon Road and Baristo Road.
Shuttles will be provided from designated
parking lots, but public transportation
and car pooling is strongly encouraged
as this event draws a capacity crowd.

"Co-sponsored by the City of Palm Springs,
Opera in the Park is one of the premiere
public events in the Coachella Valley. We
are particularly grateful to all of our
generous sponsors and in-kind supporters.
Under the skillful guidance of our Music
Director, Mona Lands, I feel that our
level of performers has been elevated to
new heights and I'm certain that our
talented singers will captivate the
audience," said George Klauss, President,
Palm Springs Opera Guild.

This festive day in the park will consist
of food and wine sales (by the bottle or
glass) by Jensen's Finest Foods along with
a variety of other restaurant and food
booths. This year, there will be an
expanded variety of non-profit
organizations, artisans and unique
art vendors along with Opera in the
Park logo t-shirts, hats and sundries.

Furthering the mission, the Palm Springs
Opera Guild provides Opera Outreach
programs to children residing in the
desert. The 2009 outreach presented
musical programs to over 12,000
students from kindergarten to high
school seniors attending schools and
academies throughout the Coachella
Valley.

The main goal is to enrich the lives
of children by providing them access
to opera which in turn will allow them
to find their own musical passion.

LA TRAVIATA

One of the special events on the PSOG 09/10
season calendar was a performance of
"La Traviata" at the McCallum Theater
in Palm Desert, California.

Soprano Performing at the 09 Opera In The Park

Libiamo ne'lieti calici (Drinking Song) is the most
famous duet from Verdi's La traviata, perhaps one
of the most well known fragments of opera around
the world, and an obligatory performance (as is
this opera itself) for any great tenor. The song
is categorized as a Brindisi, which encourages
alcoholic drinking. Some of the well known tenors
who have performed it include Luciano Pavarotti,
Giuseppe di Stefano, Plácido Domingo,
José Carreras and Enrico Caruso. Some of the well
known soprano performers include Teresa Stratas,
Natalie Dessay, Anna Netrebko, Nellie Melba,
Amelia Galli-Curci and Maria Callas. The libretto
(words) were written by Francesco Maria Piave.
